The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Societyby Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
This book (with its mouthful of a title) is a marvelous story that is told in a series of letters between a London writer, Juliet Ashton, and members of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The setting is Guernsey, one of England’s Channel Islands, and it takes place a couple years after the island was occupied by the Nazis during World War II.
I read nearly the entire book in one sitting on the plane between San Diego and Chicago; I was about 70 pages in when I boarded the plane, and literally read the last sentence as the plane touched down at O’Hare. It’s one of those books that you can’t put down due to its charming and eccentric characters; a romantic storyline; the intriguing plot; and interesting historical background about the German occupation of the Channel Islands.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get lost in a good story on a cold, rainy day where you don’t want to leave the comfort of your couch.
The verdict: 5 out of 5 stars
