Baby Registry

We bit the bullet and set up our baby registry yesterday at Babies R' Us. We knew it would probably be overwhelming and take a long time, and it did... imagine not knowing a thing about strollers and car seats, and realizing they have about 50 models of each lined up and on display... despite both of us feeling like a fish out of water, I think we did a nice job of choosing the very basics to get us started, and getting some good practical items at all price points.

The nice thing about Babies R' Us is the store is set up in such a way that it's easy to locate different categories of items; i.e., mattresses and bedding are in one color-coded area, and feeding supplies are in another. The thing I don't like, which I didn't realize until after the fact, is that a good number of the things we registered for are available for purchase in-store only and not through the website. I find this inconvenient and had I known this ahead of time, we probably would have split the registry between Babies R' Us and Target, or some other store.

Many of the items not available on-line are the clothing items, but honestly we don't care if people buy us clothing not on the registry. At the very end of our trip we scanned some basic clothing sets like onesies, sleepers, and socks - knowing people like to give clothes as gifts and wanting to provide that option - but the clothes must change too quickly and vary too widely by store to make it available online.

Some of the items we registered for are things we know we'll buy ourselves - like the crib. But because we'll get a 10% "registry completion" coupon near our due date, there are certain items we'll probably add to the registry, like a high chair, that we'll need once the baby is older but we can save money on now using our 10% off coupon and any gift cards we receive.

Wow. A high-chair. I was just thinking about bottle feeding baby Mash. I guess this little one is going to need a real chair.

What an adventure!

Which was more fun - bridal registry or baby registry?

I'd say the bridal registry was more fun, because we got to pick out fun new things for ourselves. With the baby registry, even though it was fun picking out cute bedding and stuff, it was also like "Aaahh!!! There are 100 different kinds of bottles! 50 different kinds of bottle nipples! 100 varieties of strollers! How do we know what to get??" :-) Luckily I had done some reading beforehand to help us figure out what exactly we did need and what's just marketing hype (do you really need a baby wipe warmer?).

I love Jack's baby wipe warmer...but that is with cold MI winter nights...might not be as big of a deal in Cali.

Talk to me before buying a highchair.

That first comment was from me:) I've heard no on the wipe warmer because then when sh/e doesn't have a warm one, they scream like the dickens!

I'm definitely going to fall into the category of "practical mom." I figure with things like baby wipe warmers - items that are not necessary for the health and development of your baby, but rather became trendy over the years - why get the baby used to something like that when they don't know the difference... because if you suddenly stop using warm wipes, they'll start screaming!

Ok, I have never heard of a baby wipe warmer.....for heavens sake what will they come up with next?? I know it has been 21 years since I had my last baby but you guys did not have a wipe warmer and you did not know the difference and you did not cry when I used them right out of the package. Just my opinion but definately not needed...
