Jason decided to humor me when I told him I wanted to get rid of the oversized shelves and the hundreds of cracked and dusty jewel cases, and transfer our collection into zippered three-ring cases that have plastic sleeves to hold each disc and the inside artwork.
It was quite a time-consuming project, but well worth it. We were able to ditch the humongous wall unit and condense all of our music into five sturdy cases - which, in the event of another fire evacuation or something equally horrible - would allow us to easily grab our entire CD collection and throw it in the backseat of the car.

Nice! I literally threw away many of my jewel cases. I suppose baby Mash will want to look at them some day as nostalgia?
We also threw out all the plastic jewel cases - they're unnecessary. We just saved the "booklets" inside so we have the artwork and list of songs for each CD.
What a great idea!! I can't believe how much space you saved by doing that! My CD collection is quite pathetic, but I am still going to do the same!
where did you get the nice grey storage portfolios? Great idea. We should do the same!
We got the storage cases through Amazon.com after shopping around online - they were the cheapest at Amazon. The brand name is Case Logic, and they come in a variety of sizes - holding anywhere from 20 CDs to around 360...
