Last month I received an invitation to a Grand Valley State University alumni reception, taking place here in San Diego on February 11. There is a national education conference in town, and several GVSU faculty and administrators are attending, including the new university president.
I was curious to find out how many other GVSU alumni are living in the area, so I attended the reception last night with Jason as my date. It was a mix-and-mingle event at The Prado restaurant in Balboa Park, with free drinks, hot appetizers, and desserts.
I was surprised to find about 40 alumni in attendance, and learned that there are about 100 former GVSU students living in San Diego. But what really knocked my socks off was running into a woman that I went to grad school with! When I entered the room I saw her and thought she looked vaguely familiar, but when she approached me and I read her name tag, we both realized that we graduated from the MPA program at the same time (in 2004). Turns out she moved to San Diego about six months before we did, and has been working here ever since.
We chatted for a while and exchanged business cards. What a small world!
