Proud Mommy

Just before Christmas, I was tucking Isabelle into bed and she said, "Mommy, I want to give a present to Miss Tracey's baby."

Miss Tracey is Isabelle's art teacher, and she is very pregnant - due sometime soon.

I told Isabelle that would be fine, we could get Miss Tracey's baby a present next time we were at Target. She replied, "No, I want to give her one of my stuffed animals. I have a lot of stuffed animals, mom, and I don't need so many."

She continued by telling me that she wanted to give the baby her "duckie," which is sort of a soft blanket with duck feet and a head, that she had just slept with the night before. I asked her if she was sure, and she insisted that I please wrap the duckie in some wrapping paper so she could take it to school the next day. She said, "The duckie is so soft, and the baby will like to lay on it."

I happened to have a blank card at home, so I wrote a note to Miss Tracey explaining why she was getting a used stuffed animal, then wrapped the duckie and put it in a gift bag.

The next morning Isabelle clutched that gift bag all the way to school, and refused to let go when one of the teachers asked her if she wanted to put it on a shelf until later. Apparently she carried the gift bag all morning and gave it to Miss Tracey during her art class.

Isabelle has a strong personality and on the surface a lot of people see the stubbornness, the bossiness, and the independence that makes her think she's older and smarter than she is. But at her core she is a sweet, bright, loving kid.
