Mommy-daughter weekend

Isabelle and I were left to our own devices again this past weekend, as Jason was up in Los Angeles for the MLS Cup and a bunch of related work events. Because it was a cold, windy and damp weekend here - not to mention at 32 weeks pregnant it's harder for me to play with Isabelle at the playground - we had a cozy weekend full of indoor activities.

On Saturday morning I took her to one of her favorite places, the library, where she got to pick out two new movies to rent for the week and some new bedtime books. She chose Disney's Beauty and the Beast and has been watching it non-stop! Following the library we had lunch at Tinleaf, where she told me unprompted over grilled cheese sandwiches, "Mommy, I had the best birthday party ever!" But the highlight of Saturday was a trip to the movies where we saw Happy Feet 2 - or as Isabelle calls it, "Mumble" (after one of the main characters).

Sunday we woke up to a gray and rainy day, best suited for pajamas and a good book in my opinion, but there's no way I could stay cooped up inside the house with a three-year-old all day. So we made our weekly trip to Target, visited Michael's to buy some supplies for a holiday arts and crafts project I'm going to work on with Isabelle, and spent some time at one of Isabelle's other favorite places - Barnes & Noble. They have a Thomas the Train set in the children's section that she loves to play with, and then she spent more than an hour looking through books and playing with every noisy educational toy she could get her hands on. (On a side note, I've been surprised lately at just how much floor space B&N now dedicates to toys and games - I have to wonder if they're losing money on traditional books due to the popularity of e-readers, and need to devote more of the store to other sources of revenue. The toy section of our local B&N is huge!)

After we headed home I set up Isabelle's tent in the living room where she was content to watch cartoons and play with her new birthday Barbies. And by the time bathtime rolled around, she was actually getting sleepy and her eyes started slamming shut while I was reading to her. When I turned out the light, she put her arms around me and said, "I wuv you mommy." I told her I had a very fun day and she said "I had fun with you, too," and then 30 seconds later she started snoring.

What a great way to end the weekend! I had time to take a hot shower, watch a couple re-runs of the Big Bang Theory, and drift off to sleep listening to the sound of rain....
