Fond farewells

When I was promoted in October, my office was moved into a new building that our company had just purchased. It is near our corporate - close enough that our parking lots connect - and has earned the nickname "The Annex."

Six of my co-workers and I occupy a suite in The Annex, and over the last six months have become fairly close - it's been a tough couple of months with all the change happening and we've come to rely on each other for professional (and mental!) support.

One of my colleagues, the person who actually hired me and was my boss for the first four years, has accepted an executive level job at a health system on the east coast and will be moving to Washington, DC in four weeks. Subsequently, his last day was yesterday.

Naturally we decided to send him off in style - my co-worker Suzi hosted a dinner party at her house last night for all of us from The Annex plus our significant others. We had a potluck with way too much food - lots of wine, appetizers, salad, bread, lasagna and my dessert (a recipe of my mom's for gooey caramel oatmeal bars which earned me a round of applause!).

It was both a good and a bad thing that the party was last night - good because it was a Friday, bad because three of us (myself included) had to be up early for work-related events this morning. More on my event in another post...

I've been joking with my co-worker that his leaving is going to benefit me - because I'm moving into his office! I'm perfectly content in my own office, but he has REALLY nice matching furniture complete with file drawers and a hutch with cupboards, so I get to upgrade!

It will be sad to see him go, but this is a good career move for him and it means I have one more friend to visit on the east coast!
