I've got a question for all the moms out there. At what age did you transition your toddler from their crib to a bed?
We heard Isabelle wake up from her afternoon nap, and as usual she spent a few minutes talking to herself and playing with her stuffed animals. I was about to go into her room and get her when I heard a really loud thud. I had just enough time to think "What was that?" when she started screaming (the "I'm in pain" kind of cry).
I ran into her room and she was laying on the floor - because she had obviously tried climbing out of her crib and fell. She scared herself more than anything, as there were no apparent injuries, but she scared me too because she had blood all over her mouth! When she fell, she must have bit her lip pretty hard - she has a fat lip and there are still bite marks that will probably take a day or two to go away.
I really didn't think we'd have to worry about her climbing out of her crib until around age 2. I feel like in a few months she might be ready for a bed, but at this point (21 months) she still needs to be confined. There is no way she would stay in bed when we turn off the lights and shut the door, and she still thrashes around in her sleep so much.
Then again, she's our first child and we don't really know what the "right" age for a bed is... for now, I'm hopeful that she learned a lesson and won't try it again - at least for a little while!
UPDATE: I talked to our daycare provider this morning, and she informed me that Isabelle has been climbing out of her naptime pack-n-play for several weeks now. I'm really not surprised - and this confirms that it's only a matter of time before she tries to escape the crib again. So at 21 months she's going to have a big girl bed (or at least a mattress on the floor!).

Hey there!
We transitioned Avery to a bed when she was about 20 months. We did it so early because we were moving into our new house and thought that we might as well move her into a new bed too. We made a big deal about her new big girl bed. We started by putting the mattress on the floor with the side guard, then gradually moved up into the actual bed with the guard.
When we first moved her out of the crib, she still wouldn't get out of bed without us.
We moved Jack to his toddler bed when he was about 20 months, too. Mainly so we could work through the transition before we needed the crib for Brady. The first couple months with the bed were when I was grateful for having the video monitor. He would often sit in his room and look at books or quietly play with a couple toys until he passed out on the floor (it never took much longer than 30 minutes before he was asleep.) We would then go in and move him up into his bed where he would sleep for the rest of the night. He often still decides to sleep on the floor about 50% of the time. And I don't care as long as he is sleeping!
