January has been a fairly boring month - but it still managed to slip by too fast! We haven't been doing anything much of note lately. The last couple of weekends we've had to reserve for running errands and finally taking care of "stuff" that's hard to fit in during the work week - like finally applying for Isabelle's passport, getting the oil changed and the belts replaced on my car, and spending roughly 20 hours doing the taxes for the health care marketing association whose Board I sit on (and I'm happy to report that I'll be stepping down from my Board position at the end of April so I'll NEVER have to do their taxes again. What a time-consuming nightmare).
I thought I might be able to sneak in a little "me time" this weekend but haven't been so lucky. Last night after I picked up Isabelle from daycare, she started to get sick seemingly out of nowhere - one minute she seemed fine, the next minute she was burning up with a fever of 101.5. She also had chills that made her teeth chatter, and was breathing so rapidly and shallowly it made me nervous. We decided to take her to the 24-hour urgent care, and while I was checking us in she puked all over herself, all over Jason, and all over the lobby floor.
After spending 2-1/2 hours in urgent care we learned that Isabelle has "viral gastroenteritis" - i.e., the stomach flu. The good news is, after she threw up and the nurse gave her Tylenol, she started perking up - and today she was feeling much better, although she's on a diet of PediaLyte, bananas, applesauce, and toast.
We didn't get home from the urgent care until almost 1:00 a.m., and so the three of us slept until almost 10:00 this morning. And then we all took a nap from 1:30 p.m. until almost 4:00! Obviously Isabelle needed the rest, but I can't believe Jason and I also slept the entire day away!
Tomorrow I have to work one last shift at the Farmers Insurance Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course. My employer is the medical provider for the event and every year we have a tent in the vendor area where we give away bottled water, sunscreen, lip balm and hand sanitizer to the spectators. During the work week it's nice to get out of the office for a few hours and people-watch on the golf course, but I'm not looking forward to being there by 8:00 on a Sunday morning.
Things pick up for us starting this week. Jason flies to Miami Thursday for work meetings with the NFL (don't feel bad for him, he gets to go to the Superbowl). So I'll be a single mom Thursday through Monday. In mid-February our friends Smitty & Shaphan are coming out for a visit from Michigan, which we're both looking forward to, and the last weekend of February Jason will be in Vancouver during the Olympics for meetings with the NHL. Then the first week of March, Jason's friend Caleb is coming to visit us from Boston.
Now I just need to find some time to tackle the stack of books I got for Christmas! I've been trying to get through a stack of magazines and literary journals that have piled up for months, but I'm itching to read a good novel again...

Oh, Isabelle! I'm sorry to hear she's sick. A lot of kids in Michigan have RSV right now. Hoping you get a moment with your books today.
Oh, poor little thing. I hope she's feeling better soon. Tell her Aunt Kim sends lots of get well kisses her way.
And I know it's not exactly relaxing because it's work but I am so jealous of the fact that you get to spend time at Torrey Pines. I hope you found a few quiet moments for yourself.
