E-Z Bake Cake

For the last couple of years I've seen Betty Crocker Warm Delights advertised on TV, usually showing women unwinding at the end of a long day by sinking into their couches with a warm chocolate chip cookie fresh from the microwave. I must not be in their target market because somehow I've managed to resist the temptation!

In truth, I don't like to buy packaged processed foods, whether its chips or cookies or boxed meals like Hamburger Helper - Jason's much more of a snacker than I am, especially when it comes to salty foods like chips. I snack often throughout the day but I try and eat food with protein like crackers and peanut butter or crackers with cheese, trail mix, yogurt with granola, etc. Of course we do keep a chocolate drawer filled with Hershey's Kisses, miniature Reeses, etc., but I think having a little chocolate in moderation is a necessary part of each day.

Jason went grocery shopping last week and came home with all kinds of surprises. I opened up our pantry door and saw that he had purchased Betty Crockers Warm Delights Minis, the molten chocolate cake at only 150 calories each. I eventually decided to try one, and laughed at the instructions because it reminded me of using my friend's E-Z Bake Oven when I was a kid. The kit comes with a small packet of cake mix that you mix with water, then you squeeze an envelope of fudge (about a tablespoons worth) on top of the batter. Microwave for 30 seconds, and voila! Instant chocolate cake.

Now for the results of my taste test: It wasn't the best chocolate cake I've ever had, but it actually wasn't bad - I can see how it would satisfy someone's sweet tooth if they had a craving for cake, and the fact that it seems "freshly baked" (warm from the microwave) helps. For someone who is watching their calories but likes to have dessert once in a while, it's actually a pretty decent serving for only 150 calories. You could make it even more appealing by adding fresh berries and some reduced- or fat-free Cool Whip.

I won't rush right out to the store and buy more, but I'll definitely eat the remaining two that are in our cupboard :-)
