Cubicle culture

Have you ever stepped onto an elevator, or wandered through JC Penney, and wondered if there are people who actually listen to the music that’s playing overhead? The answer is yes, and the biggest fan of this jazzy, saxophone-filled, easy-listening genre sits behind me at work.

For a couple of days last week I honestly thought she was “on hold” a lot, and was turning on her speaker phone so she could continue to work while she waited for the person on the other end of the line to pick up – because I kept hearing what sounded like your garden variety on-hold music.

But no… it turns out she’s jamming to her own CD player. Certain sounds, like nails on a chalkboard, make people cringe. For me, the sound of this music is causing nausea and headaches.

When we moved into our new building last year, I lost my office so I’m stuck in a cube farm without a door I can shut against offensive noise and smells (gotta love the person who microwaves leftover fish for lunch!).

I wonder what would happen if I blared some Rage Against the Machine from my own cubicle tomorrow morning…
