Tania's Book Review

The Best American Short Stories, 2008
edited by Salman Rushdie

The "Best American" series is published annually and includes anthologies such as the Best American Short Stories, Essays, Mystery Stories, Nonrequired Reading, Sports Writing, and Travel Writing. I've been reading the fiction series annually since 2003, when I first discovered it. Each year a different editor is chosen to select the best of the best - last year's editor was Stephen King, and in 2006 it was Ann Patchett.

I enjoy taking a break from novels every so often to read short stories. They don't require the same time commitment as a novel and they're easily digestible; I can often start and finish a story on my lunch hour. "The Best American Short Stories" is published annually and is, in my opinion, the best fiction anthology on the market.

The 2008 collection was very good. My favorite stories were "Child's Play" by Alice Munro and "Vampires in the Lemon Grove" by Karen Russell. In fact, the Munro story was so good I was inspired to read more by her, so I'm currently reading one of her collections of short stories called Runaway.

Verdict: 4 stars out of 5
