Deja Vu

Living in Southern California the last two years has taught me one thing - October is known for Halloween and wild fires.

It was at this time last year we had the crazy fires all over San Diego County that forced a half million people to evacuate their homes, Jason and I included. Over the last few days there have been some terrible fires in Los Angeles, but so far nothing to be concerned about in San Diego.

Then, yesterday I pulled onto the freeway heading north and saw a huge plume of black smoke on the horizon - definitely close enough to be local. Sure enough, a fire broke out in Oceanside near the Camp Pendleton marine base, which is about 15/20 minutes north of where we live. As of today they've got the fire partially contained and last I heard it's burned 3,000 acres. I don't believe any homes have been damaged.

And throughout the day today we keep getting updates from our corporate communications office regarding additional fires that have sprung up; a wild fire in the East County this morning, a brush fire in Rancho Penasquitos this afternoon, another brush fire in 4-S Ranch, a second fire in East County... fortunately none of these are out of control and according to news reports they are fairly small and can be contained.

Unfortunately the weather is warm and its windy, which only makes things worse...

Man! I wouldn't think October would mean crazy fires. That strikes me as a hot weather thing. Glad you don't have to evacuate and hope it stays that way!
