The Dr. Pepper incentive

I read a very interesting article in a recent issue of P.R. Week - Dr. Pepper has announced that it will give a free can of Dr. Pepper to everyone in America if Axl Rose releases his "Chinese Democracy" album in 2008.

If you're a rock fan I'm sure you're aware of the legend surrounding "Chinese Democracy," the new album by Guns-n-Roses (minus all of the original members except Axl) that has been in production for 10 - 15 years. Every year there are rumors that the album will be released soon, and then the date comes and goes. Allegedly the reclusive Axl Rose is a perfectionist hell-bent on producing a perfect album, and won't release it until he's satisfied.

A funny quote from the Dr. Pepper announcement:
"It took a little patience to perfect Dr Pepper's special mix of 23 ingredients, which our fans have come to know and love," Dr Pepper director of marketing Jaxie Alt says. "So we completely understand and empathize with Axl's quest for perfection -- for something more than the average album. We know once it's released, people will refer to it as 'Dr Pepper for the ears' because it will be such a refreshing blend of rich, bold sounds - an instant classic."

Something else I found interesting, because I never would have guessed this - apparently Dr. Pepper's core audience is men between the ages of 18-34! Who knew!

Oh, PR Week. I wish we got it at our office. I miss reading it from my internship days. It's almost worth buying on my own.
