Even though our lease isn't up until July 31, Jason and I have started our new apartment search. We've narrowed down the location (we definitely want to live in Encinitas), but we want to spend the next couple of months comparing traditional apartment complexes with standalone condos and homes for rent. We're trying to find the perfect balance between square footage, proximity to the beach, and the cost of rent.
Last weekend we looked at a great apartment near the water - it was about the same size as our current place (900 square feet) and the rent was only $300 more per month, not bad given that it had an ocean view and was literally a block from Moonlight Beach. Unfortunately another pair of tenants in the building asked to swap apartments so they could have the ocean view, and the landlord allowed it. So we couldn't have taken it even if we'd wanted. That means the other tenants' apartment is now available, but it's not big enough for us.
Today we are venturing back into Encinitas to look at a couple of apartment complexes. After the horrible experience we've had in our current complex we're not eager to jump back in a similar situation, but that's why we've started looking extra early - to make sure our next home is the right home.
