My Dream Job

Although I'm content with my current job and am not job-hunting, I still like to see what's out there from time to time. I've been in health care marketing for almost eight years, not including a year's worth of internships, and sometimes I wonder whether it's something I'll do forever or if this is just my career for now.

If I could choose my perfect job, without worrying about salary, I would work with books in some fashion. Today I stumbled across the perfect entry-level position - an Assistant Editor with a publishing company in New York:

The Ecco Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers seeks an Assistant or Associate Editor. Under moderate supervision,
  • Develops, edits, and assists on 20+ high profile titles per year.
  • Writes editorial materials, including letters to authors and artists, acquisitions memos, flap copy, title sheets, and catalogue copy.
  • Reviews proofs with design and production; develops ideas for book covers and jackets.
  • Deals directly with high profile authors, artists and agents.
  • Prepares and types forms, including contract requests, profit and loss statements, production memos, estimate requests and payment requests.
  • Acts as liaison between editors and sales, marketing, production, design, and managing editorial departments and as an in-house liaison for freelance editors and researchers.
  • Assists editors in the acquisitions process by reading and evaluating manuscript submissions and researching and developing ideas.
  • Performs all clerical duties for titles, including typing, filing, and mailing.
  • Manages Publisher's Office - includes answering phones, transmitting manuscripts, doing mailings, and performing all other Assistant job duties.

The job probably pays next to nothing, and it's in New York City, but it's fun to think about!

I could see you doing that job. You are an amazing editor with a great eye for detail.

Remember when you were my supervisor? I randomly thought of this while reading this entry. That was so random yet fun!
