I Heart Stephen King

One day this past summer, I read that one of the directors for the movie The Shawshank Redemption was turning Stephen King's novella The Mist into a movie. Upon learning this, I immediately e-mailed my friend Brooke, because sometime around our freshman year of high school we devoured every book and short story that Stephen King wrote. One of the first books I ever loaned Brooke was Skeleton Crew, a collection of King's short stories. The Mist is part of that collection and was one of our favorite stories.

Brooke hung onto my book for so long that the cover started falling off and some of the pages began to fall out, so she kept repairing it with clear packing tape. Eventually she felt bad enough about the book's condition that she bought me a brand new copy and kept the original. I still have the version that Brooke gave me, and she still has the tattered copy that I loaned her wayyyy back in 1992 or 1993.

By the way, I still read Stephen King. I've met people who turn up their noses at the idea of reading a book in the (gasp!) horror genre, but I will always defend him. King is a fantastic writer and a great storyteller, and that's what really matters.
