I've received some phone calls from friends and family wondering if we are in the dangerous fire area. Unfortunately we live in one of the mandatory evacuation areas.
We packed a couple of suitcases this morning and left; both of us went to work, because we weren't sure what else to do! Because I work for a hospital in a safe area, and we must be open to accept patients who are being routed from hospitals in the evacuation areas (in addition to patients who must be treated for fire- or smoke-related injuries), we are working around the clock for the next 48-72 hours, or as long as necessary. A communications person must be on-site at each facility at all times during a disaster like this, in order to field media calls and keep communication going from site to site. Fortunately, there are three of us on my team who will be dividing up the shifts over the next couple of days.
I will be staying at my co-worker's house (she lives in a safe area near downtown San Diego). Jason is staying with his friend Bubby downtown.
