Chocolate Lovers, Take Note

As I've gotten older, I've started to appreciate dark chocolate the same way I've learned to appreciate good coffee. I'd much rather have a strong cappuccino than a sugary coffee drink flavored by too much syrup. I'm not sure if my palate is more refined or if my taste buds have started to weaken, but I enjoy a small piece of dark chocolate after a meal.

The September issue of Consumer Reports rated the best dark chocolate bars, and I thought I'd share the results. The top two picks, rated "excellent" and "very good" respectively, are Cacao Reserve Extra Dark with Cacao Nibs by Hershey's (65% cacao) and Lindt Excellence Extra Fine Dark (70% cacao). I was pleasantly surprised by these results because you can find the Hershey's Cacao Reserve and the Lindt bars in the candy aisle at most grocery stores. And they're inexpensive.

I purchased the Lindt and can confirm that it is a nice after-dinner treat.

If you're still not convinced, remember that dark chocolate is high in polyphenols, which are antioxidants that provide cardiovascular benefits.

Doesn't Lindt make those yummy truffles too? Ooooh, so dangerous!

Y'know what? As a lifelong chocolate addict, I STILL can't get into dark chocolate. Never liked it, never will. If I even try to eat a little piece of it, I end up throwing it away. I will always stick to milk and white chocolate. But I don't like straight espresso, either, and I DO like my coffee sugary, so I guess I'm not digging the bitter thing. Bring on the sugar!!
