I recently purchased a Cuisinart ice cream maker, as I had a gift card to Crate & Barrel and considering how much ice cream we consume in our house, it seemed like a great gift to ourselves because it's normally not something we'd spend the money on.
It makes ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbet. Earlier this week Isabelle and I experimented with our first recipe for chocolate-pretzel frozen yogurt. It was very easy to make - unlike the old ice cream makers from years past, the newer ones don't require you to use ice and salt. Instead you pour the ingredients into an insulated frozen bowl and the machine aerates it for about 20 minutes until voila! - homemade treats you can eat straight from the machine.
Our first batch turned out pretty well, although the taste of the plain yogurt base is pretty strong. My guess is, the soft-serve frozen yogurt you get at ice cream shops doesn't taste so "yogurty" because it's been loaded with sugar.
For our next batch I think I'm going to try true ice cream, but substitute reduced fat versions of the whole milk and cream...
Isabelle loves helping in the kitchen!

So - do you recommend the purchase?
If you're someone who already takes the time to cook and uses kitchen appliances, then yes - the machine is easy to use and allows you to custom make any ice cream you want using fresh and even organic ingredients. With that said, I'm still experimenting with our machine... but I like knowing what's in our food and when you look at the ingredient list of store bought ice cream, especially low fat ice cream, there are just so many chemicals and fillers and preservatives....
