U-Pick Strawberries

This morning the three of us went to the Carlsbad Strawberry Fields, which isn't really that far from us - just a 5-minute drive up the freeway. They sell flats of strawberries already picked, but they also have a "U-Pick" option that allows you to pluck them right off the plant.

For $15 we left with a large bucket overflowing with bright red, juicy berries. I cleaned and cut them while Isabelle was napping (and ate quite a few). Jason made a strawberry pie this evening, and I'm going to make a baked triple-berry granola dish that we both like. It's technically a dessert recipe, but tastes really good for breakfast!

It was easy to bring Isabelle along because she was literally penned in on both sides.

Her head kept bobbing up and down below the plants

Double-fisted! By the time we got home, she had strawberry juice all over her face, running down her arms, and on her legs. She also fell asleep during our last mile in the car, and I was able to walk her upstairs and plunk her in the crib fast asleep. Strawberry picking apparently wore her out - she slept for three hours!

Grandpa just put in 36 strawberry plants for Isabelle when she is in the neighborhood. Black raspberry and blueberry too.
