Our July 4 weekend

If you’ve been checking our blog and wondering why I’ve been MIA, it’s because we spent most of the holiday weekend in Aurora, Ohio. My college roommate, Alison, married Jeff, her longtime love (I’m not kidding – they’ve been dating for 10 years!) on July 4.

It was our first trip with Isabelle, which made everything that much more interesting. I was anxiety-ridden before the flight, wondering if she’d play the role of “screaming baby on the plane,” but she was a champ during our two 12-hour travel days. The first leg of the trip, from San Diego to Minneapolis and then to Cleveland, she was a total ham and did her best to charm the pants off everyone seated around us. On the return trip, from Cleveland to Atlanta and finally to San Diego, she slept most of the trip which was a blessing.

The trip was not as much fun for Jason because he was on full-time daddy duty while I had fun with my friends. But Isabelle was extremely well-behaved for almost the entire weekend despite the horrendous travel and sleeping in an uncomfortable pack-and-play in a strange hotel room…. so she and Jason participated in many of the activities.

On Friday I went to a local spa with Alison, her mom, the groom’s mom, and another friend, for manicures and pedicures. We followed our spa outing with beer and bar food at a local firehouse-themed tavern. And on Friday night, we attended the “rehearsal cookout” under the pavilion at a golf course, which was a lot of fun (who doesn’t like keg beer, jello shots, and karaoke?).

Saturday was the perfect day, because the wedding didn’t start until 5:00 so we had lots of downtime to relax, take naps, and hang out. The ceremony itself was beautiful, and we sat at a really fun table with two of my other friends and another couple who we hadn’t met before. The reception ended up being too loud for Isabelle so Jason took her back to the hotel room once dinner was over, and I spent the rest of the evening on the dance floor (with a short intermission at 9:45 to watch a few of Aurora’s fireworks).

look how flexible she is despite those leg rolls!

On Sunday we drove to Alison & Jeff’s house in Richmond Heights, where they hosted a casual brunch for anyone who wanted a nice meal before getting on the road. The weather was beautiful and we sat outside on their deck for a couple of hours before heading to the airport.

I took yesterday off to recover, as travel can be exhausting without a baby and I had a couple of late nights during all the festivities. Isabelle was so happy to be home that she took a solid four-hour nap during the middle of the day, which allowed me to sleep for a couple of hours!

So I’m back to work feeling refreshed from having a few days off and getting to spend some time with my friends…

She is flexible! Go Isabelle. Maybe she'll be in gymnastic?

Sounds like you had a great trip. I'm happy to hear Isabelle was a good traveler.

Haha look at that chubby lil leg :) Must have been such a relief to know she wasn't "that baby" on the plane, hey? Sounds like you had a nice lil get-away!
