Professional development

I’ve mentioned in a previous post that I’m on the board of directors for Health Care Communicators (HCC) of San Diego, which is a small non-profit affiliated with the national health care marketing association that I’m a member of (the Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development, or SHSMD).

Anyway, I share the role of programming co-chair with my colleague Alison, who works in the marketing department at one of the other hospitals in our system. Our job is to plan career growth/educational seminars for our members.

Our second event is tomorrow, on the topic of “Restoring Public Trust in Healthcare.” We found a great speaker who is fairly well known in the industry, at least in southern California. It’s a very timely topic and I’m looking forward to it!

I’m also looking forward to tomorrow’s event so we can redeem ourselves from our first event, ha ha. We had an event in June on the topic of Stark Law as it relates to health care marketing, advertising, and physician relations. But our speaker didn’t tailor his presentation to the audience, and the presentation he gave seemed like it was straight out of the federal government’s playbook. It was all about billing, recruitment, financials, and anti-kickback statutes and it went over everyone’s heads.

Oh well, we learned that it’s probably smart to ask for a copy of the speaker’s presentation ahead of time, just to make sure it’s relevant… and if nothing else, we found a great new venue for future events!
